The central square is full of young people. They are sitting, drinking, talking, visiting with friends: enjoying the activity at the many small tables spread outside the surrounding cafés.

The spring sunshine is warm and encouraging at this southern French town in Provence. The Plain trees around the square are budding out to make a green and yellow arbor over the scene.

We were touring France in 2008, and had just arrived at Avignon on this beautiful Saturday morning. So we joined the crowd, sipped our own drinks, and took photographs to record the event for this painting.
