Artwork Description
Meerkats are a type of Mongoose. The name Meerkat comes from the Afrikaans (Dutch population of South Africa). The English translation is marsh cat, although Meerkats don’t live near marshes and they are not cats. They were first named in 1776. There are three different subspecies of Meerkats. It is suspected that there is a fourth subspecies but further research is needed to prove this.Meerkats live in southern part of Africa which is dominated by the Kalahari desert – The Kalahari spreads over the countries of South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.
Average lifespan of meerkats is 12 years, but longer in captivity.
A phenomenal sense of smell helps meerkats locate prey, which they then dig out with their long-clawed forefeet.
In half a day, a Meerkat can dig 400 holes and displace 50 times its bodyweight in sand!
Meerkats appear to be immune to scorpion and snake venom.
The black patches around their eyes helps protect against the constant glare of the sun, rather like humans wearing sunglasses.
